Spidercam - Working and Technology, How Spidercam Works

Cameras are one of the closest things to humans today. They became favorite of everyone soon after its discovery. Everyone loves to capture his/her best moments in it. Like everything else, Cameras also evolved with the time from black & white to colored and now also HD. Their quality improved with time. Spidercam is a result of this evolution only. The trademark name of this camera is ‘spider cam’. It was developed in the United States in 1984. At that time it was known as ‘skycam’ but after some development in its system, it started being called ‘Spidercam’.

Years ago, watching sports on television was so dull as the camera angle used to be very weird. At that time the quality of the picture was bad and only we could get the horizontal angle view. We had to get satisfied with that. As time passed, the quality of telecast get improved and telecaster started using multiple cameras to get the best actions from the playground. Each side of the ground used to have cameras to catch different angles but it didn’t feel like a playground. The spider cam made the whole thing easy because it could capture those angles which a normal camera can’t do. It covers the whole ground and captures the best view for us that’s why watching sports like football, cricket, tennis, and baseball on television is now more interesting. The best feature of spider cam is that it can move horizontally and vertically at the same time and can capture any action in three-dimensional space.

Technology of Spidercam

Spidercam is not the foremost version of itself there is many more camera like skycam are available. Spidercam is used in sports like Cricket and football so that you can get the top view of pitch and ground. Four ropes which are called Kevlar are used to hang the whole system. The Kevlar is not the usual rope, it is very thin and you can very hardly see it. The average diameter of Kevlar is 0.5 cm but its strength is very good. It can carry the complete system of 30-40 kg. The whole length of a single kevlar is 1000m to 1500m. The kevlar is connected to pully and winches. When the kevlar is pulled by winches through the pully, then the whole system of spidercam moves in a different direction.

How Spidercam Works

In some stadiums, the roof and floodlight are used as the base of the system. But for those stadiums where roof and floodlight are not developed, then artificial poles are used to hang the dolly of spider cam. After establishing the camera in the stadium the pilot also has to mark the no-fly zone i.e those areas where the dolly will not pass which is near the audience or such a place where it is a risk for damage of peoples. After marking these all, the pilot can control it in the preside movement. The motion of winches decides the movement of the camera. Once the setup is complete it is ready for taking shots from different angles. The whole system moves very fast, so for the stabilization of the camera gyroscope is used. It is like gyro-sensor in mobile and by this, the camera makes itself stable even as the whole system moves at 30 kmph.

Exchange of Data

Two out of four Kevlar cables also have fiber optics cables woven into them. One carries commands to the camera and the remote head. And others bring the camera’s high definition signal back to the control station. By this, we get the best possible quality of videos. The pilot also can move the spidercam through specific points in fix motion. The camera is not fixed for use and it is used as per need.

Controversy of Spidercam

Sometimes, it also became controversial to use spidercam in cricket. As per record in 2014-15 in the fourth match between India and Australia, Australian captain Steve Smith missed a catch which was blamed on a supporting wire being within his line of sight. Also in Champions League Twenty20 a match between Mumbai Indians and Sydney Sixers a shot from Dinesh Kartik hit the Spidercam. The shot didn’t damage the system but the ball was called dead.
