As per International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, In cricket, the bowler must bowl with a straight arm over the solider motion. If the bowler’s elbow straightens when they bowl, then it is considered throwing and hence considered as illegal. A bowler is permitted to have a small degree of extension of their elbow while bowling. This is up to 15 degrees and greater than that is considered illegal.
If an ICC match official has doubt on bowler’s action and decides to take some negative measure towards the bowler, then bowler also has the right to object by reporting their action at an ICC testing center. There are several guidelines for testing centers as well. In order for a testing center to receive ICC’s approval, it must have special facilities and proper equipment for measuring each and every movement of bowler’s body.
Testing Bowling Action in Cricket
Bowling action in cricket and activities are tested by officials. They measure the amount of elbow extension during the bowler’s action. The mobility and structure of the bowler’s arm are varied from person to person. Sometimes bowler having flexible elbow may also appear to have a suspect bowling action even if they have less than 15 degrees of extension. In particular, some bowlers can hyperextend their elbow during the bowling action. Hyperextension means extending beyond the straight arm position which is also not acceptable by ICC.
In order to verify actions, a detailed report of the bowling action of the bowlers is produced by the testing center and sent to the selected members of ICC’s panel of human movement specialists. This panel reviews the reports against the list of criteria to ensure the result. If the reports follow the criteria then there is no issue. But if the reports are not positive then a player can be suspended from international cricket. Ultimately all reports are sent to their domestic board. This is done so that they can also check about their fault. Once the player admits that their bowling action in Cricket is improved then they may apply for the retesting of actions.
In the past, many bowlers had these kinds of issues but due to lack of proper technology ICC couldn’t do anything. But now the advent of modern technology does bein cricket. ICC created their criteria of arm mobility and due to which many bowlers got suspended from International Cricket. Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan, Sachitra Senanayake of Sri Lanka are few popular names. And also who can forget Sunil Naraien the mysterious spinner from West Indies who had to change his action for not obeying ICC’s rules.
